Menotti, Gian-Carlo (b. 1911) ltalian-born composer living mainly in the
United States since 1928, but latterly in Scotland. Has won international
success as composer of operas (with his own librettos) in a "realistic" vein

the Ball, with libretto originally in Italian, and successors, nearly all in
English, including The Old Maid and the Thief, The Medium, The Telephone, The
Consul, Amahl and the Night Visitors (for television), Maria Golovin, The Last
Savage, Help, help, the Globolinks!, and Martin's Lie (for church performance,
mainly with child performers); also The Unicorn, The Gorgon, and the Manticore,
sung offstage, mimed onstage; has also written piano concerto, etc. Acts as
stage director for his operas, and directed the film of The Medium. Founder
-director of music festival at Spoleto, Italy, 1958.
